Up to 172 Flood Deaths in Southern Brazil

To date, the search continues for 42 disappeared and more than 2.3 million citizens remain affected in some way.

The death toll rose to 172 in Rio Grande do Sul, in southern Brazil, due to flooding in recent weeks, reported the bulletin released on Monday by the State Civil Defense.

The authorities recovered the bodies of three victims in the last few days, while the search for 42 missing persons continues to date.

Due to the flood of the river, 77,874 people were stranded and rescued.

More than 2.3 million citizens remain affected in some way. Of these, 579,457 are homeless. Meanwhile, 37,154 remain in temporary shelters.

On the other hand, according to the Civil Defense,  475 of the 497 municipalities (95.56 percent of the total) in Rio Grande do Sul suffered damages.

To compensate for the damage, the State has a staff of 28,165 officers working on floods, in addition to 4,046 vehicles, 14 aircraft and 127 boats.
